The GIAN Concludes its 2005 Tendering Procedure
The Geneva International Academic Network (RUIG-GIAN) has approved, in the framework of its fifth Annual Tendering Procedure, eight projects presented by multidisciplinary research teams. Researchers include professors from the University of Geneva, the Graduate Institute of International Studies (GIIS), the Graduate Institute of Development Studies (GIDS) and other universities, in collaboration with one or several international organisations. A total funding package of SFr 1.6 million is available for these projects.
The GIAN pursues its objective - to reinforce cooperation among institutions of higher education and international organisations - by financing and supporting research and training projects.
Each project approved by the GIAN, following appraisal by its Scientific Committee, falls within the purview of at least one of five thematic areas: sustainable development; social equity; globalisation and international commerce; intercultural relations and dialogue; humanitarian law and human rights.
The projects approved in 2005 concern the following topics:
- Israeli-Palestinian Joint Water Projects: Evaluating 12 Years of Cooperation;
- Enhancing National Capacities to Assess Wildlife Trade Policies in Support of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES);
- Sustainable Management of Marine Biodiversity: Environmental and Social Diagnosis of Marine Turtles in the South-West Indian Ocean;
- Measuring Equity of Reproductive Health Services;
- Armed Non-State Actors and the Landmine Problem: Recommendations for their Positive Contribution to a Landmine Ban and Mine Action;
- The Development Potential of Trans-National Migrants in the Health Sector in Geneva;
- Promoting Decent Work in Construction and Related Services: The Key Role of Local Authorities;
- Creating a New Dynamic for Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) for Peaceful, Equitable, and Sustainable Development.
The GIAN is pleased to note the participation of numerous international organisations and NGOs (ILO, IOM, IUCN, UNCTAD, UNECE, UNEP, UNIDIR, WHO, WWF, GIPRI among others) in the aforementioned projects. Several academic and research institutions from throughout the world are also implicated in GIAN-supported research projects.
